The community will come together on Friday morning to celebrate First Nations People, their culture and heritage.

Hundreds of residents are expected to hit the streets in Mackay for the annual NAIDOC March.

Chairperson of the local NAIDOC committee Rebecca Budby expects it’ll be a bit of an emotional day as it pays tribute to this year’s theme ‘For Our Elders’.

“It’s the fact that we’re able to share and just celebrate our culture and be able to be proud of what we’ve accomplished throughout the years with our elders,” she says.

“Our elders have accomplished so much over the years with our human rights and just being able to provide for their families and teach their culture.”

The event is open to people of all backgrounds and Ms Budby hopes the blending of cultures will continue well after NAIDOC Week.

“We like to share other cultures as well,” she says.

“Some times in the past we’ve had other cultures come and dance with us on NAIDOC Week.

“So it’s a matter of just sharing … we’re not just celebrating for ourselves, but we’re celebrating for Australia as well.”

The march starts at 10am on Macalister Street and ends with a family fun day at Queens Park.
