The member for Dawson has slammed upgrades to the Bruce Highway saying not enough is being done in his electorate.
It comes after the Albanese Government announced the first set of safety upgrades in the $9 billion Bruce Highway Safety Package.
Andrew Willcox says although he welcomes the announcement, not enough is being done in his electorate.
“I have to say I am extremely disappointed to see the majority of the first round of upgrades, especially the major projects are outside of my electorate of Dawson between Mackay and Townsville, which is the worst rated section of the 1600km of the Bruce,” Andrew Willcox said.
“Every time it rains the Bruce Highway is cut in multiple sections including at Goorganga Plains and Plantation Creek which brings the vital transport route to a grinding halt costing the local economy,” he said.
“What this announcement has shown is that one of the worst sections of highway in my electorate is still not deemed a priority, and that’s just not good enough.
“My community has been calling for the highway to be fixed with more than 1,000 residents signing my Back Our Bruce petition which was presented in Parliament.”
Mr Willcox said he will write to the Federal Ministers for Transport to advocate for funding in Dawson.
“This is section of the Bruce that needs to be fixed, and fast,” he said.
“I will continue to fight to ensure our region is given priority, for the sake and safety of my
people”.
