Our head chef Tony has always carried a dream — a dream rooted in his deep love for authentic Japanese cuisine.

During his eight years in Shibuya, Tokyo, he explored a world of incredible flavours, but none left a greater mark than the Japanese-style grilled meat served at traditional izakayas.

The moment premium Wagyu hits the searing grill, the sizzle, the aroma, and the melt-in-your-mouth tenderness create an experience that stays with you forever. That unforgettable taste never left Tony’s mind.

Even after running Yatai Sushi for 12 years, that passion continued to burn.

“How can I bring this flavour to Mackay?” he would often ask himself. “How can I share this soul-stirring, sizzling experience with our local community?”

When the world slowly reopened in 2022, Tony began his search for the perfect space. But finding a venue on Mackay’s high-demand main street that met all the requirements — ideal size, location, and affordability — proved to be a real challenge.

Then, in February 2024, the phone rang.

Our generous landlord Gary offered us the ground floor of 99 Victoria Street — and along with it, his advice, encouragement, and full support. That call was the turning point. From there, Tony’s dream began to take solid shape, one step at a time.
