Fears Fitzroy could flood, water to rise at Yaamba by Saturday: Cyclone update

Rockhampton’s local disaster management group has activated it’s Lean Forward Phase.

It comes as the Bureau issues a moderate flood warning for the Fitzroy from early next week.

The Bureau says along the Fitzroy River, minor flooding is expected to be occurring at Yaamba by Saturday in response to local rainfall. At Rockhampton, small river level rises are occurring.

This could see further river level rises are expected later in the week as flows arrive from the Mackenzie River.

Moderate flooding is possible at Yaamba from as early as Saturday evening and at Rockhampton from as early as next Monday. Forecasts will be refined as upstream peaks are observed.

The move signals heightened readiness ahead of possible flooding – emergency service resources on standby.

Heavy rainfall has caused rapid rises in the Connors, Issac and Mackenzie rivers – contributing to the flood warning for the Fitzroy.

It comes as a Watch and Act alert has been declared by the Central Highlands Regional Council yesterday.

Residents in low lying areas around the Mackenzie river should prepare – properties likely to be affected by flooding.

Flooding may exceed previous flood events – residents asked to warn neighbours, secure belongings and monitor conditions.

Both Rockhampton and Livingstone Shire’s council’s remain on standby after the flood warning for the Fitzroy River.

Rocky Mayor Tony Williams said it was still too early to give exact prediction figures- but said council were monitoring the situation closely.
