BHP fined for Christmas holiday pay dispute

Bosses can no longer employees to work on Christmas Day following a landmark ruling in the Federal Court.

It was found that BHP was wrong when it ordered 100 workers at Daunia mine near Moranbah to work on December 25th and Boxing Day, with no additional pay or consultation.

One woman was forced to leave her teenage daughters alone, while a man missed his last Christmas with his dying mum.

The Mining Union has won a court case arguing it was a breach of the Fair Work Act.

A federal court judge has ordered the employees be paid a total of $84,000 in compensation.
